Of all the projects talked about at the Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic Con, Section 31 stood out as something altogether new in the Star Trek franchise. Not only did we get to hear from some creatives including Olatundeo Osunsanmi, Omani Hardwick, Kacey Rohl, and Sam Richardson, but we got to chat with series star (and general queen of the moment) Michelle Yeoh via video! As if that wasn't exciting enough, we then got to watch the first Section 31 trailer, which you can view here:
That's gotta be the most badass Star Trek trailer to date, and not just because it's using Beyoncé's Formation as background. After the trailer played, the creatives got to share some more info on the film, with executive producer Alex Kurtzman saying the show fits into the "spyfi" genre.
Omani Hardwick expanded on that, saying Section 31 was the "messy version" of Star Trek. It's "Guardians of the Galaxy on steroids..." he said, "there is humor... you have a love story somewhere in there, if you want that."
We certainly do want that. We want everything that this movie can give us.
Star Trek: Section 31 does not currently have a release date, but we know it will be on Paramount+ next year.
