Star Trek's new Uhura actor wasn't told her role in the audition, and Celia Rose Gooding is "grateful" because of the pressure that comes with the legacy character

Celia Rose Gooding believes she would’ve failed her Star Trek: Strange New Worlds audition if she knew she was reading for Uhura

Celia Rose Gooding is Nyota Uhura. All you have to do is watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and it’s immediately clear that Gooding nails the role. Gooding channels so much of the energy that Nichelle Nichols put into the role while simultaneously making it her own. The result is a version of Uhura that feels new, familiar, and just right at the same time.

Uhura’s legacy is something that is very important to Gooding. “My experience is pretty unique, because I’m stepping into a character that is really established in this franchise already, and so incredibly beloved,” Gooding says during the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds panel at Emerald City Comic Con. “To have an opportunity to reprise a character but also put little pieces of myself in there. When I first got the audition for Strange New Worlds, I didn’t know that I was auditioning for Uhura.”

Gooding said that her auditioned scenes were real scenes that wound up in the show, but they gave the character a false name. “Real sides. Scenes that exist and made it to the final episodes, but the character name was Uhboa. Not a real name,” Gooding recalls.

“After the fact I found out I was playing Uhura, and I am really grateful that they did not tell me, because I would have tanked it if I knew who I was auditioning for. The pressure came after. Getting into the universe, I think I was just really excited to have a job opportunity.”
