A Skeleton Crew easter egg hints at the most obscure piece of Star Wars history - the Star Wars Holiday Special

The hologram shows up in episode one of the Disney+ series and proves that more than four decades later Star Wars still can't escape the shadow of that weird night of television.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is finally here and it managed to hit all the nostalgic notes that we were hoping for. From beginning to end, the first two episodes were bursting with references to classic Star Wars shows and films, but one Skeleton Crew easter egg is from something that even George Lucas has tried to forget. That’s right; there is a Star Wars Holiday Special reference in Skeleton Crew and it fills our hearts with joy.

It is one of those 'blink and you’ll miss it' moments in episode one of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. When Whim and Neel get back home, Neel’s family is watching a really weird hologram show. It is like a group of circus performers juggling and dancing around. There is a reason it looks so strange and out of place – it is the same hologram scenes that Chewbacca’s son Lumpy (bet you forgot about him!) watches during Life Day in the Star Wars Holiday Special.

It isn’t something that a superfan in the crew snuck in under everyone’s noses, either. The showrunners confirmed that it was what they considered the most “unexpected reference” for Star Wars fans in Skeleton Crew; and for good reason. Lucasfilm has spent decades pretending the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special never happened. It is the one part of the franchise that has never had a physical or streaming release. Though things like Life Day and other bits from the ill-fated special have snuck into Star Wars canon over the years, the hologram show from Skeleton Crew will be most fans' first taste of just how weird the Star Wars Holiday Special really was.
