Post-Stranger Things, Finn Wolfhard is looking for roles not inspired by 80s horror... except for the movie he just made
After Stranger Things, It, and Ghostbusters, Wolfhard is trying to shake off the "80s kid" persona. Well, after his 80s-inspired slasher Hell of a Summer drops, of course

I suppose someone once looked at Finn Wolfhard and said, "Hey, this kid looks like he belongs in the 1980s." He's made quite a success out of that determination - Stranger Things and It were huge for the 22-year-old actor, and while not being actually set in the 80s, the Ghostbusters films obviously owe their popularity to that decade. Now, it only makes sense that Wolfhard would want to switch up his retro roles, but he's still got at least one role on hand straight out of the Me Decade.
That role is from Hell of a Summer, the summer camp slasher that Wolfhard wrote, directed, and stars in along with Billy Byrk. As if "summer-camp slasher" didn't already call to mind the Reagan years, Wolfhard admitted in a recent interview with Men's Journal that the horror flick is very much inspired by the kinds of things his Stranger Things counterpart would've seen in theaters (when not being chased by a demogorgon, of course).
"For Hell of a Summer," says Wolfhard, "It just made sense to make certain choices; to pay homage to old slashers and have a Carpenter-esque synth score. I felt like it was a good way of showing people that this is the kind of movie I've been training for to make my whole childhood."
Of course, that childhood is already over and, once Strange Things season 5 finally airs, so too will be the series that defined it for him. And as we said at the top, Wolfhard is very much looking forward to not only being "the 80s kid" from here on out.
"Now that I'm known for that kind of stuff," Wolfhard told MJ, "Generally I'm looking less to do that kind of thing."
Your call, Finn. But in that case, better get your best 50s clothing out. We hear Welcome to Derry is casting.
Stranger Things season 5 is expected later this year. Hell of a Summer is in theaters now.
As we all collectively wait for Stranger Things season 5, here's the keys to getting ready:

- Getting to know the Stranger Things season 5 cast
- There needs to be more death in Stranger Things, says co-star Gaten Matarazzo
- The Stranger Things time jump between season 4 and 5 has been confirmed by Netflix - and it raises some serious questions
- "They land the plane," David Harbour describes the Stranger Things finale, which he calls its "best episode"
