While franchise leads Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have worked hard for years choosing interesting, curious roles to distance themselves from the cultural phenomenon that was Twilight, Taylor Lautner — who played Jacob, the werewolf third in the supernatural polycule that almost was — has chosen a different route, with a new project that sees him pair with the company behind BoJack Horseman to… make a meta-parody of the whole thing, decades after the event…?
Lautner has, as per a Variety report, executive produce and star in an Amazon MGM Studios series titled Taylor Lautner: Werewolf Hunter, created by 30 Rock and Californication veteran Daisy Gardner, who’ll also act as showrunner. (Despite being developed by Amazon MGM, it’s not clear where the show is ultimately headed; Prime Video would be the most obvious option, but Amazon MGM does produce shows for other networks and streamers.)
If the title doesn’t give you an idea of how strange the show is going to be, the official description will:
“After wrapping the final ‘Twilight’ film, Taylor Lautner vanished from the spotlight. Fans speculated, tabloids theorized—but the truth is wilder than fiction. Taylor wasn’t just taking a mental health break. He was preparing for his real calling…Taylor Lautner: Werewolf Hunter. Playing himself, Taylor is drawn into a secret society of werewolf trackers who need his unique expertise. As he navigates his double life—Hollywood actor by day, supernatural warrior by night—Taylor must wrestle with the ultimate irony: fighting the very creatures that made him famous. Between saving the world, reviving his career, and falling in love, he faces the ultimate question—what happens when your biggest role becomes your greatest enemy?”
The show came to Amazon MGM from independent studio Tornante, which had previously given the world BoJack Horseman and Tuca & Bertie. No release window has been suggested for the show, but we can’t wait; if it’s done right — and Lautner follows through on the promise shown in his UK comedy series Cuckoo — it might be the replacement for What We Do In The Shadows that we didn’t see coming.
