If there is one family that makes all of us feel normal, it’s the British Royal family. Their ongoing dramas, infighting, and scandals gave Netflix enough fodder for six seasons of The Crown, but the streamer might not be finished with them just yet. After the final season of The Crown aired in 2023, fans have wondered what the future of the series might look like. Turns out, it is probably going to be a set of prequels.
Rumors have been swirling for over two years about a potential prequel to The Crown, focusing on some of Queen Elizabeth’s ancestors rather than her progeny. The spin-off would follow the four British kings who reigned between 1901 and 1952, when Elizabeth II took the throne for her notably long reign.
Fans might have worried that the lackluster reception to the final season of The Crown might have dampened Netflix’s appetite for more of the series, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. In August 2024, Peter Morgan, creator of The Crown, confirmed that he isn’t done with dramatizing the Royal Family just yet.
Setting future seasons of The Crown further in the past would fix one of the biggest criticisms of season six, which was that many people vividly remember the events surrounding Diana’s death and Charles' controversial second marriage, thus making it harder to believably dramatize them. A spin-off focusing on four kings, whose reigns were shorter and less famous, could give some good perspective into the throne that Queen Elizabeth would one day inherit. There is also something very poetic about starting the spin-off of The Crown with the death of Queen Victoria and ending it with the start of Queen Elizabeth II, two of the most notable monarchs in British history.
Whether this all comes to pass, however, is still debatable. Netflix hasn’t confirmed that the prequel to The Crown is in development and Morgan’s comments could easily just be him testing the waters for interest in the show before he pitches it. Only time will tell when or if we get to watch more of the scandalous Royal Family in action.
