If you’ve been keeping up with the Summer 2024 anime season, you’ll probably notice a small change to the schedule going forward. Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World’s second season is coming to an abrupt end after its fourth episode, with new episodes delayed indefinitely. Not exactly the ending that fans were looking for from the new season.

The announcement came via the production committee’s social media page, where they explained that they have ceased broadcasting and streaming Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World season two “in order to maintain the quality of the main story.” Instead, they will be airing completed episodes of the first season in the show’s timeslot starting on August 7 on Japanese TV to finish out the Summer broadcast schedule. No word on when new episodes will be produced.

What is the reason for this sudden decision? A big part of it seems to be concerns about the quality of the visuals in the show. Kei Sazane, who wrote the original light novels the series is based on, released their own statement, saying “Some people voiced their concerns that the quality of the visuals in some parts of the animation was questionable. The production committee and the production studio took these concerns seriously, and that is how the decision came to be.”

It is true that there have been some dodgy moments of animation throughout the new season of Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World, but it is still surprising that they decided to pull the show from the current broadcast schedule. This is a very rare move that hints at some significant issues behind the scenes. It is likely a symptom of Japan’s notoriously intense anime industry, which has a reputation for grinding artists down to a pulp with difficult deadlines.

There is no word yet on when new episodes of Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World season two will air. The earliest option would be October 2024, but the Fall schedule is quickly filling up. At this rate, January 2025 seems more likely.
