Two little words carry more weight than any of the action in Max's The Last of Us season 2 trailer

Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal return for The Last of Us season 2 on HBO and Max this April and their relationship is going to be strained before we get to the end.

The past is a tricky thing; it has a habit of coming back when it is most inconvenient. The Last of Us season two is coming and iit isn’t the infected that are going to bring Joel’s world crashing down around him. It is a simple lie he told at the end of season one. For all the action and chaos inflicted by the infected, including making one extra crispy with a flamethrower, the emotional weight of The Last of Us season two looks like it is going to hang on two little words.

For those who need a little refresher, Pedro Pascal’s Joel killed a lot of people to save Ellie from being dissected in hopes of finding a cure for the infection that has brought humanity to the brink of extinction. The question lingered in the air, though; did Ellie want to be saved? Was she ready to make that sacrifice and did Joel take that choice from her? All we know is that, when asked about it at the end of the season, Joel swears that they left the Fireflies because they couldn’t find a cure from her condition – a lie.

Sure, there is a lot of cool action in this trailer for The Last of Us season two. We love the practical effects used to bring the infected to life. We love the sense of normalcy that people have built as they try to survive the end of the world. And did we mention that flamethrower roasting what looked like a Bloater from the games in the trailer? Still, nothing in the trailer gave us the chills quite like Bella Ramsey’s Ellie saying two words at the end of the trailer.

“You swore.”

How well that betrayal comes across is going to be what makes The Last of Us season two a success when it comes out on April 13, 2025.
