Fencers have a very particular set of skills, one that has led Vico Ortiz to an acting career. The actor got their start doing stunts before eventually getting a role in the HBO show, Our Flag Means Death. In our latest Awe Talk, which our editor-in-chief Chris Arrant conducted on-site at GalaxyCon Columbus 2024, Vico Ortiz shared details about their love of fencing and swords. 

Ortiz noted that, “Fencing was a career. I did competitions, and I led workshops,” before joining the entertainment industry. They said, “The reason I'm in the union is because I was doing [swordplay] on sets. One of my first gigs was with Lake Bell on Children's Hospital, doing swordwork. And now it's come full circle, as we're both on Harley Quinn as voice actors. Her character and mine have had interactions in the show, but we haven't been in the same recording studio yet. But I'm like 'Man, our voices are together!' I don't know if she'll remember, but I remember her from Children's Hospital. I would love to see her again, and be like 'Yo, remember that time you were pregnant and I caught you with a sword?' That would be dope.” 

Considering that Our Flag Means Death is a show about pirates, a demographic of people who quite literally lived and died by the sword, Ortiz’s fencing skills came in handy. Now we’re just waiting for them to get the chance to star in a Star Wars project. Come on, Lucasfilm, give them a lightsaber!

Popverse Membership FAQs

What is a Popverse Membership?

The Popverse Membership is a way for you to turn your living room into the Main Stage or amplify your in-person convention experiences. You can sign up for a Popverse Membership for guaranteed access for a limited time to tickets to our events (like MCM Comic Con and New York Comic Con), photo ops and autographing tickets, and paid digital experiences; exclusive access to video content and celebrity panels, a limited edition gift, and guaranteed access for a limited time to exclusive show merchandise online. For the cost of a 1-day live event ticket, your Popverse Membership virtually takes you to every day of ALL four shows.

What is the cancellation policy?

You can cancel any time through the account management page, but cancellations will only affect future charges associated with their subscription and the cancellation becomes effective at the end of the current billing period. If you cancel within your subscription period, you will retain access to your subscription benefits until the day your next payment would have been taken. There are no cancellation charges.

What if I forget to cancel my subscription before the renewal period?

Unfortunately we do not offer refunds and all subscriptions automatically renew unless canceled prior to the renewal date.

How do I change my current plan?

To change your plan between Fan and Superfan, you will have to cancel your existing plan first. The subscription will have to complete its billing period before you can re-subscribe to a new plan. If you still had time left on your previous plan, those benefits will continue till the end of that billing period.

Are tickets to physical events included with the Popverse Membership?

No, and tickets to physical events are not included with your Popverse Membership. Physical events are separately ticketed and ticket prices vary based on event and type.

Will tickets sell out during the Superfan presale?

No, the Superfan Popverse Membership is limited, so tickets will not sell out during the Superfan presale and all Superfans will get the tickets they want (limited to 2 per ticket type) for any show they're purchasing tickets for.

If I don't buy a Popverse Membership, can I still purchase tickets to this event?

Of course! Popverse Memberships are not the only way to buy tickets. ReedPop introduced Popverse Memberships as a new way for our fans to get increased benefits to each individual event, but also the content we'll be making available from all of our shows throughout the year. The Superfan Popverse Memberships allows subscribers to receive guaranteed access for a limied time to buy tickets. You can still purchase tickets on our website when they go on sale to the general public.

If I buy two tickets to an event with my Superfan Popverse Membership, do both of us get the Superfan Popverse Membership perks like guaranteed access for a limited time to autographs and photo ops?

Those perks are exclusive to our Superfan Popverse Membership members! If you buy a ticket for a friend or family member to go with you to an event, only you as the Superfan Popverse Membership account holder will have guaranteed access for a limited time to autographs and photo ops.

Will the same email work for my Popverse Membership that I use when I buy tickets to an event?

We recommend using the same email address you'd use to buy tickets to our shows or for your NYCC Fan Verification account if you have one. However, this is a separate account that you're creating so the email and password will be whatever you choose when you sign up.

How long do I have access to the live streamed panels for?

You can watch them live as they're happening and then you'll continue to have access for up to 30 days after each event ends.

Is the limited-edition gift sent once per year, or just when I initially sign up?

You'll receive a limited-edition gift at initial sign-up for a Popverse Membership, and with every annual renewal.

How long does the Superfan guaranteed access period last for tickets, photo ops, and autographs?
