When The Runaways debuted back in 2003, it introduced a whole host of unruly teenage heroes into the Marvel universe. While their publication history has been broken at times, one member who has always had a strong following is founding member Nico Minoru, which is why Marvel is bringing her into the Ultimate line with Ultimate X-Men #4, as revealed in Marvel's new June 2024 solicitations.

From writer and artist Peach Momoko, the ongoing Ultimate X-Men storyline continues to delve deep into the iconic team’s lore to bring us some less-known characters. The storyline so far has centered around Hisako Ichiki (Armor) and Mei Igarashi (Maystorm) as they come to grips with their mutant powers.

What is interesting about bringing Nico Minoru into Ultimate X-Men is that she isn’t traditionally a mutant. Since she was introduced as a founding member of The Runaways, her powers have typically been arcane in origin. She doesn’t have a strong history with the X-Men, allowing Momoko to forge ahead in uncharted territory for the team. Without the likes of Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, or even Charles Xavier, this new history of the X-Men has room to grow and find their own identity.

The synopsis for Ultimate X-Men #4 suggests that Nico will discover that Hisako and Mei have powers and potentially reveal her own abilities as well. Whether this means that she joins their growing group of extraordinary youngsters or remains on the outside due to their different origins won’t be revealed until the comic goes on sale on June 12, 2024.
