It has been in the pipeline for years, but we’re now just a few weeks away from seeing Netflix’s take on Yoshihiro Togashi’s YuYu Hakusho. The latest live-action adaptation of a popular anime from the streaming service has high expectations – not only because of the beloved source material but also because of the positive reception to the live-action One Piece earlier this year.

We’ve already had a trailer and plenty of production stills. Now we’re just waiting for YuYu Hakusho to drop on December 14. Like the original manga and anime, this adaptation will follow the exploits of Yusuke Urameshi, a normally selfish teenage delinquent who surprises everyone in the afterlife by sacrificing his life to save a child. As a result, he is given a chance to return to life and become the Spirit Detective, who is charged with keeping the balance between Earth and the Spirit Realm.

The December release date for Netflix’s YuYu Hakusho comes almost exactly three years after the series was first announced in 2020. At the time, Netflix didn’t have a great track record with their anime adaptations, but the success of One Piece, which managed to fix some of the pacing issues with the early chapters of the manga, has lifted expectations for this follow-up series. The original anime ran for 112 episodes and is still a beloved series almost thirty years after it went off the air.

We won’t have to wait long to see if Netflix can deliver yet another solid live-action take on a beloved Shonen anime, with YuYu Hakusho releasing on 14 December.
