If you're a DC Comics fan of a certain age, John Stewart was your Green Lantern because of animated shows like Cartoon Network's Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. This is why it was pretty confusing in 2011 when we got a Green Lantern movie featuring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. The Green Lantern movie was universally panned, and even star Ryan Reynolds has joked about it in the years since. Personally, I never saw it because, well, it didn't have John Stewart in it. And that suit with the muscle striations hurts the eyes.
Turns out I'm in good company, because Aaron Pierre, the actor set to play John Stewart in the upcoming HBO series, Lanterns, has never watched the 2011 Green Lantern movie. "I haven't seen that, no," the actor told Entertainment Weekly. Instead, Pierre spoke about watching Justice League Unlimited and first coming across John Stewart there.
Justice League Unlimited was a sequel to the Justice League animated show, running from 2004-2006. When the original Justice League show hit the airwaves from 2001-2004, it introduced heroes like Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter, John Stewart, and more to millennials and Gen Z kids who hadn't read comics yet. All these years later, it remains the place for some of the most in-depth John Stewart stories. In 2022, John Stewart was starred in an animated film called Green Lantern: Beware My Power, where he was voiced by Aldis Hodge. Hopefully Aaron Pierre has seen that film or has plans to watch it at least. Because unlike the 2011 Green Lantern movie, it's good, and it's got John Stewart and Hal Jordan in it!
