Creature Commandos is world building for Superman and Peacemaker, says DC Studios co-head James Gunn

Pay attention to who's got the power and who's using it in the new DCU series, according to the man behind it all

Everyone’s been so curious about the backstory of DC Studios’ Creature Commandos and how it fits into the new DCU canon that not enough attention has perhaps been paid to what the new Max Original series means to the future of the DCU. That might be a mistake, according to series creator (and DC Studios co-chair) James Gunn.

Talking to the Hollywood Reporter, Gunn was asked — as he has been repeatedly — how Creature Commandos is related to earlier DC canon and whether or not that “counts” in the new canon, and he answered as he has done multiple times in the past. Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad are “light canon,” he says, with the former being “pretty straightforward, with the exception of the appearance of a certain group at the end. They don’t exist yet.” He also added that “if we mention [something from the past] in one of the new DCU shows [and movies], then it happened.”

Perhaps more interestingly, Gunn revealed that DC fans should pay close attention to the worldbuilding of the new animated series, because it sets up things to come in future DC projects. “Everything is very consistent in terms of the politics of the world and where the world is at and what’s going on,” he said. “Who are the metahumans in power, who are the metahumans not in power; who are the power brokers, who are not the power brokers. So we see a glimpse of it here, but we see more of it in Superman and Peacemaker.”

Oh, and that’s not the only thing that will crossover between the show and the rest of the DCU.

“We’ve talked about all of these characters in live-action and how we would do them, if we did them, in live-action,” Gunn revealed at one point. “I don’t want to give away any secrets, but we use some technology in Superman that’s completely new in regards to this kind of stuff. So we would know exactly how to do GI Robot.”

Creature Commandos episodes 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Max. New episodes will debut every Thursday.
