Matthew Gray Gubler is back for Criminal Minds: Evolution, and we have one question: does Reid ever curse?

It's the news we've all been waiting for: Matthew Gray Gubler will be back as Reid on Criminal Minds: Evolution. But will the edgy reboot allow him to curse?

Ever since Criminal Minds: Evolution began streaming on Paramount+, we've been missing one thing: Matthew Gray Gubler as Dr. Spencer Reid. The cast of Criminal Minds has changed over the years since the show first began airing on CBS back in 2005, but one of the few central figures has always been Gubler's Spencer Reid. As lovely as it has been to see a different side to the other characters in Criminal Minds with Evolution, it's all felt bittersweet because of Reid's absence. Luckily for all of us, Gubler will return to the role of Reid for an episode in season 3 of Criminal Minds: Evolution, as Deadline reports.

With this news in mind, we have to wonder how the edgy tone and use of profanity that separates Evolution from the original Criminal Minds show will fare for someone like Reid. It's rare to ever see Reid lose his cool, despite having lived through some of the most harrowing experiences on the BAU team. But you would have to imagine that a guy like that would have to drop the F-bomb every once and a while, right? Or maybe, because he has an eidetic memory that allows him to recall anything he's ever read, he would have some delightfully poetic ways of cursing.

Criminal Minds: Evolution hasn't been afraid to spotlight the personal lives of the agents of the BAU, with Penelope Garcia's romantic life being a narrative thread throughout the seasons of the Paramount+ show. Though it's unclear how much more of Reid we will see beyond an episode in season 3, there's so much territory that fans are hoping to see addressed for Gubler's character. How did he hold up during the pandemic? Has he tried out pickleball? Did he have a Brat Summer (probably not, but the idea of Spencer Reid existing in the same world as Charli XCX brings me joy)? It's your move, Paramount+.
