As if the colder weather and increasing amount of Nat ‘King’ Cole on the radio isn’t enough of a sign that we’re officially in the holiday season, the arrival of a trailer for this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special is all that’s needed to let us know that it’s time to start thinking about presents, loved ones, and time travel in all its lovely forms. Especially that last one, of course.
The new trailer for ‘Joy to the World,’ written by past Who showrunner Steven Moffat, sees the Doctor come face to face with Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan — who plays Joy, the guest companion of the episode — as well as a hotel that offers guests the chance to visit Christmases in different eras, and, seemingly… himself? It’s not something he seems to find particularly exciting, telling himself, “You have to be mysterious all the time! That’s why everyone leaves you! That is why you’re always alone.”
Wait. That sounds exactly like the set-up for a reversal before the episode’s end. The Doctor can’t have that unhappy an ending at this time of year, after all…!
Disney+’s official longline for the special reads, “When Joy checks into a London hotel in 2024, she opens a secret doorway to the Time Hotel — discovering danger, dinosaurs, and the Doctor. But a deadly plan is unfolding across the Earth, just in time for Christmas.” Watch the trailer below, and then check in on Disney+ December 25 — or on BBC One, for those in the UK — for the episode itself.
Last year, we ranked the Doctor Who Christmas Specials to that point. Go see if you agree with our take.
