Prime Video's Hazbin Hotel creator shares how Sir Pentious went from a one-off joke to “one of the hearts of the show”
Showrunner of Hazbin Hotel Vivienne Medrano shares the behind the scenes evolution of Sir Pentious
Popverse was there for all four days of New York Comic Con 2024, immersing ourselves in the pop culture party full of vendors, events, and celebrities from the worlds of comics, movies, TV, gaming, and more. If you couldn't make it (or are worried you missed something) click the link for our wall-to-wall coverage of the event.
When the weapon-obsessed but strangely fussy demon Sir Pentious first shows up in the pilot of Prime Video's animated musical series Hazbin Hotel, it seems pretty clear that he’s just there for the episode, an amusing villain for the Hazbin family to contend with. Yet, he ended up being one of the series' most important and memorable characters. As Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano explained, that wasn't the original intention of the character.
The showrunner shared with fans at New York Comic Con that she originally saw him the same way. “He was sort of intended to be a one-off. It was like, What’s a fun kooky villain who can attack the hotel?” But while she was actually making the pilot, Pedrano realized she really liked him, on a bunch of levels. “He’s one of the best designs I’ve ever done. Most of the characters are red, he’s bright yellow, I like yellow.” She decided, “I’m going to keep this guy around.”
And slowly, she discovered, “He became one of the hearts of the show,” along with Nifty, who Pedrano said “was always meant to be a comic relief character, but then we decided she was going to have to the final moment,” stabbing Adam to death from behind.
By the end of season one, Sir Pentious has evolved from a narcissistic villain to an actual self-sacrificing hero. In the process, he discovers that Charlie Morningstar has been right in her belief that demons can be saved. Having died protecting the hotel, Sir Pentious finds himself at the very end unexpectedly now in Heaven and an angel.
Where season two will take him, neither Medrano nor voice actor Brightman would say, though Brightman did admit that season two has him doing “the most dramatic thing I have ever done in my career, in terms of heart and sadness.” Given the fact that Adam is supposedly dead, could Sir Pentious’ happy ending be not so happy after all? As Alastor the Radio Demon famously says, “Just because you see a smile doesn’t mean you know what’s going on underneath.”
